Ocean Sounds is a private organization that is dedicated to the research of marine animals, public education, and conservation of the marine environment.
The idea of Ocean Sounds began to be realized in August 2005 with the purpose of combining research with education and tourism. It is based in the Arctic, in Henningsvær, a small old fishing and whaling community in northern Norway, which is right in the heart of the Lofoten Islands.
1. Ocean Sounds-research focuses mainly on the biology of marine mammals, such as seals, killer whales, and other whales found in the waters off Lofoten Islands. This research builds a foundation for an understanding and protection of this unique marine ecosystem.
2. Educational programs and art projects will be used to make research results more accessible to the public, and to educate people about marine animals and their fragile environment. These include: school educational projects, lectures and guided tours and science and art exhibitions.
3. Tourism will be a way to educate people and support research. By offering different marine biology excursions, ocean sounds will be able to introduce ecotourism and support research projects.
4. At our Ocean Sounds Science Center, people can learn more about our research, listen to lectures, enjoy science and art exhibitions and attend our educational and art projects. People are encouraged to get involved and support our research programs.
“Ocean Sounds will promote continuous awareness, understanding, and commitment, between the public and scientists, to preserve the unique marine habitat of the Lofoten Islands"
we need your support:
New Whale Watching Guidelines: With our 4 years research experience and the help of the WWF Norway, we created a leaflet with new whale watching guidelines. Whale watching in Norway is totally unregulated and there is a need of regulating the boat traffic and human activities around the whales. Whales and whale watching boats are often disturbed by the presence of many boats or boats that drive unresponsible. Please use our guidelines, distribute them and if you go on whale watching tours in Norway, show them to your skipper and guide and ask them to follow it.
